Day 6—Hinton, Oklahoma to Santa Rosa, New Mexico ~ 621km

This morning we took a nice walk around the Red Rock Canyon. We started by rock climbing up to the top of the bluff and then walking along that. It was a beautiful morning, and the sun was just starting to warm the air. We headed out, with the goal being Santa Rosa because the park ranger at Red Rock told us it was amazing and that it was about 300 miles away, around the distance we were trying to cover.

The drive took us through the rest of northern Oklahoma, which was still really lush and green with tons of farmland. We then crossed into Texas, just avoiding Kansas. Around the Texas border, the land changed to become more ranching territory with open grasslands and less farm fields. Texas was great, although we weren’t in it for too long. The Dairy Queen we stopped at had its own Texas size of everything. And it was VERY large. We passed near Amarillo, Texas, and then out through to northern New Mexico. We jumped time zones again, and are in Mountain Time now, so gained another hour. We took a break at the information and welcome centre and picked up maps and information about Albuquerque and Chaco, our two destinations in New Mexico. We then headed to Santa Rosa, and the state park there. It was gorgeous, and although we got in late again, we drove around and saw a lot of the lake and desert land. We chose a ‘primitive’ campsite with no electricity, and saw a wonderful sunset over the lake. Tomorrow, Albuquerque and beyond!

What a long day, our longest. We started slow and ended strong. But I don’t know if I want to do that again
