Day 32—Salmon Arm, BC to Johnston Canyon (Banff), Alberta

Today was an amazing drive from Salmon Arm, through Revolstoke, Three Valley Gap, and Golden, up into the Purcells, Selkirks, and finally the Rockies. It was breathtaking. The roads were great, a bit busy, but that is to be expected. We were able to enjoy Tim Horton’s, a great luxury that is not available in the States! The mountain parks were spectacular, and we both would have liked to spend a week in them. Just after entering Banff National Park, we took the HWY 1A that runs parallel to the regular highway. It was super nice, and very quiet. We arrived at Johnston Canyon campground and had a relaxing evening with a fire. It was a bit chilly, but nothing too bad. It was sad to leave BC, but also exciting to be back on the road again, camping in our little tent.

Wow what a beautiful road! And the mountains are nice too. This was probably one of the nicer rides of the whole trip. The weather was great, we were rested and the road was ours. With huge mountains, dark tunnels and a surprising amount of water falls, I tried to take it all in. Passing through the tunnels Lauren points out a sign.

“ Please Remove Sunglasses”

Which of course is very hard to do on a bike… well for me at least, I don’t have a fancy visor on my helmet and I would have to take them off the old fashion way. But I didn’t.

Anyway within these huge alpine valleys, we discussed how pioneers would attempt to trek across the Rockies’. Nature seemed to loom over us, beautiful but deadly. I tried to imagine being part of an expedition as we zipped past at 100km.

Those guys must have been crazy.
